Ingredients
3/4 cups (or 1 1/2 sticks) of unsalted butter, softened
2 1/4 cups of sugar
3 large eggs, room temperature
6 tablespoons red food coloring
3 tablespoons cocoa powder (unsweetened)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 1/2 cups of buttermilk (use the homemade buttermilk recipe here!)
3 1/3 cups of flour (all-purposed, cake flour)
1 1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a cake pan, preferably 3 round cake pans, or one sheet cake pan.
In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar with an electronic mixer until fluffy. Then add one egg at a time and beat well.
In a small bowl, whisk together food coloring, cocoa, and vanilla. Add to butter mixture and beat well.
In a measuring cup or another small bowl, stir salt into buttermilk. Alternate adding in flour and buttermilk while mixing together after each pour-in.
Once combined and beginning to create a cake batter texture, add in apple cider vinegar and baking soda. Mix well.
Divide batter into pans. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes. Let cool for one hour, then remove from pans and frost! We recommend the cream cheese or buttercream frosting!
